Heart Attack Man is back, releasing the second single off of their new album, Freak Of Nature, out May 26th, 2023.
“Stick Up” begins with an unexpected tune from the Cleveland band. Rather than the catchy guitar riff opening they normally utilize, “Stick Up” begins with a synth sounding intro, which sets the tune for the rest of the song.
Dark lyrics combined with lead singer Eric Egan’s cheery vocals make for an interesting combination reminiscent of previous singles they have released, specifically “Old Enough to Die.” While the lyrics are simple and repeating throughout, they are fun to sing along to and easy to pick up. Egan seems to be hashing out some bad blood with the lyrics “dog eat dog this world’s a nightmare/I’m done trying to fight fair” in the first verse. Rather than an angry track about an enemy, he went down a unique, fun route that makes you want to relate and sing along with him, highlighting the versatility of Heart Attack Man.
All-in-all, you can tell that the band is having a lot of fun exploring new sounds and I think it’s working for them. They are advancing technically with each new song and transitioning to a more produced sound, which is more methodical and captivating. Very simple lyrics combined with a catchy beat makes for a great single in anticipation for their upcoming album. I think the change of pace is satisfying for the band and hope to see more of it in the future.
